The moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. The Oscars 2023 have been awarded to Naatu Naatu! The song made history by becoming the first song from any Indian film to win Best Song.
The Oscar for Best Song went to Naatu Naatu from SS Rajamouli’s RRR. It needed to outperform the other candidates in the category, which were Applause (Tell It Like a Woman), Hold My Hand (Top Gun Maverick), Raise Me Up (Black Panther Wakanda Forever), and This Is a Life (Everything Everywhere All at Once). MM Keeravaani, music director, accepted the trophy with a Namaste.
The film has now become the first to receive an award for a song from an Indian production. It is the second Indian song to win this prestigious award, following Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire’s triumph in the same category in 2009.
Previously, RRR won multiple US honours, including making the BAFTA 2023 longlist in the Film Not in English Language category, winning the Golden Globes in the Best Original Song category, and winning Best Song at the 28th Critics Choice Awards, along with Best Foreign Language Film, among others.
