Oscar 2023: Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers wins Best Documentary Short Film

The Elephant Whisperers, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga, won Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards. The Elephant Whisperers is the first Indian film to win an Oscar in this category, and the third to be nominated, following The House That Ananda Built and An Encounter With Faces in 1969 and 1979, respectively.

The Elephant Whisperers is a story of an orphaned elephant calf named Raghu who is cared for by an indigenous couple, Bomman and Belli, in the Mudumalai National Park. The documentary honours not just their friendship but also the natural beauty of their surroundings.

In addition to The Elephant Whisperers, the worldwide popular Naatu Naatu from SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster RRR won Best Original Music. All of the candidates attended the Oscars, with the addition of actress Deepika Padukone as a presenter, making her the third Indian star to do so following Persis Khambatta and Priyanka Chopra. On stage, she introduced the live Naatu Naatu performance.
