Shamshera’s defeat on Boxoffice could be a red flag for the industry to rethink the game plan

Shamshera, directed by Karan Malhotra, has come to an end, with the film’s collection crashing on Monday. The Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor starrer had a dreadful Monday with earnings in the range of Rs 2.85 crore, bringing the film’s four-day total to about Rs 34.6 crore approx. The film’s ticket sales dropped by 65% on Monday compared to the first day, indicating that the audience rejected it.

“With a wide release of over 4000 plus screens, Shamshera was struggling right from its start. It further couldn’t build upon in its 1st weekend and then crashed out on Monday at the box office. It’s a huge loss for the fraternity and the entire industry has gone numb. Really hope we recover fast & look forward to other forthcoming releases,” says Girish Johar, Producer & Film Business Expert.

By Sunday, the film had grossed 30 crores and another *2.75-3 crores on Monday. It is being produced on a budget of *150 crores. According to the report, ‘it will be a probable 40-41 crore nett week’ for the film.

Experts predicted that the film will do well at the box office because it marked Ranbir Kapoor’s return to the big screen following his 2018 blockbuster Sanju. Shamshera, on the other hand, started slowly and has yet to see a significant increase in its collection.

Across the board, the collections are weak. Shamshera’s lone saving grace is a large backend deal with digital and satellite partners, which would result in modest losses, but this does not change the film’s fate. On Friday, the film made a sluggish Rs 10.05 crore debut. The bad opening sealed its destiny, but there was still a tiny chance of making up some ground with a leap on Sunday, but even that didn’t happen.

The film’s content was rejected, most likely owing to the storytelling pattern. A template masala entertainment failing to open at the box office is a red flag for the industry, which will now have to rethink its game strategy.
