Pankaj Udhas on Bhupinder Singh’s demise: It’s a sad day for music in India, specially ghazal

The veteran playback singer Bhupinder Singh breathed his last at the age of 82 in Mumbai on July 18. The singer reportedly passed away due to suspected colon cancer and Covid-related complications.

Remembering the prominent singer, Pankaj Udhas shared fond memories with him and revealed that he lovingly called him ‘Bade Bhaiya’.

Anguished by his death, Pankaj Udhas quipped, “Shocked, Saddened and devastated by the news of our dear Bhupinder Singh’s demise. He was not only a wonderful human being but also an excellent singer and brilliant musician. He possessed a unique voice. I feel fortunate that I got an opportunity to spend time with him as we started a ghazal festival in 2001 and Bhupinder Singh was very supportive since the inception. I even lovingly called him Bade Bhaiya.”

He further said, “ It’s a sad day for music in India, specially ghazal. His music will always be missed and today it’s very sad that the world of music has lost another gem. May his soul rest in eternal peace!”

For the unversed, Bhupinder Singh was popularly known for crooning classics like Dil Dhoondta Hai, Naam Gum Jaayega, Ek Akela Is Shaher Mein, etc.
