Kaali movie poster row: MP Government demands a ban on the poster

Independent filmmaker Leena Manimekalai drew flak online days after she tweeted the poster of her latest documentary Kaali. The poster tweeted last Saturday shows a woman dressed as the Hindu Goddess Kali smoking a cigarette and holding a pride flag representing the LGBT community in her hand.

The Kaali poster sparked outrage online with many demanding her arrest, accusing her of hurting religious sentiments.

Not only netizens, but even Indian authorities and the government have reacted to this outrage. Even FIR has been filed against the filmmaker in various states.

Now, vehemently reacting to this portrayal, MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra on Wednesday warned to impose a ban on the film ‘Kaali’ if the objectionable posters showing the Goddess smoking a cigarette are not removed.

“Maa Kaali’s insult will not be tolerated, strict action will be taken. We will ask for the registration of an FIR. We will also ban the film in the state. Strict action will be taken if the posters are not removed,” Narottam Mishra said.

For those unaware, Manimekali is known for making films which orbit around subjects like caste dynamics, globalisation, student politics, eco-feminism, art therapy, indigenous people’s rights, and LGBTQ lives.
