US, Germany, Canada and Spain debut with wins at U-17 Women’s football World Cup

The United States, Germany, Canada and Spain debuted with wins at the U-17 Women’s football World Cup in Uruguay. The day began with group C matches at the Alberto Suppici Stadium in Colonia on Wednesday, where the US beat Cameroon 3-0 with a goal from midfielder Mia Fishel and a brace from forward Sunshine Fontes, reports Efe.

Germany, Europe’s second best team, beat reigning world champions North Korea 4-1, with goals from Charlotte Blumel, Sophie Weidauer and a brace from Gia Corley, with Yun Ji Hwa scoring for North Korea.

At the Estadio Charrua, in Montevideo, the first day of Group D began. The European champion, Spain, got rid of South Korea 4-0, and Canada punished Colombia 3-0.

Eva Navarro, Paola Hernandez and a brace from Claudia Pina, were the scorers for Spain. Canada took advantage of the last 20 minutes of the game, when they had one more player after the expulsion of Colombian defender Andrea Perez, and sealed the victory with 3-0.

The goals for Canada were shot by Jordyn Huitema, Andersen Williams and Jessica De Filippo. After the first day for the four groups, there will be a rest day on Thursday.

On Friday the games will resume for groups A and B. This is the sixth edition of the U-17 Women’s World Cup and the first one held in South America.
