Liger box office collection: Film fails to entice the audience in Hindi belt, opens to mix response

Mumbai| Liger marks Vijay Deverakonda’s debut in the Hindi Cinema. The Pan-India film, has been making noise for all the right reasons ever since its trailer was dropped. Post that, videos about the mass hysteria owing to Vijay’s fan following raised our expectations about the film.

However, the film failed to entertain the audience and we saw atrocious reviews doing rounds on the internet.

Talking about the collection till now, it has managed to rake in 38.7 crore gross worldwide. While it collected 28.1 crores on Day 1, it saw a dip of 62% and raked in 10.6 crores gross on second day.

The Hindi version collected a total amount of 5.75 crore nett. It was released in very few theatres late Thursday night and collected 1.25 crore from paid previews and on second day, it collected 4.50 crore.

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared two-day collections of the Hindi version of Liger. He tweeted on Saturday, “Liger opens to mixed response on Day 1… Good/ fair in mass pockets, dull/ordinary at metros/multiplexes… Needs to improve its performance on Sat and Sun… Thu [preview shows] 1.25 cr, Fri 4.50 cr. Total:  5.75 cr.”

Looking at the underwhelming response the film received over all, Girish Johar, Producer and Film Business Expert, pointed out what went wrong. He said, “The cast of Liger undoubtedly went all-out to promote the film across the country, but in the end of the day people are yearning for. People prefer to stand all day long just to watch Vijay, but are not buying the ticket of his film, this proves that the audience is not willing to pay for sub-standard content. This is production houses are overlooking these days. They should eye on to create quality content.”

He further asserted why it is important for upcoming Pan-India films like Brahmastra, Vikram Vedha, and Ponniyin Selvan-1 to perform well.

“I hope Brahmastra, Vikram Vedha, and Ponniyin Selvan-1 perform well at the box office as it is the need of the hour. People down South are coming back to theatres, because of which, all sorts of films are performing well there. But, it’s the Hindi belt audience who are not coming to theatres. And it’s not that they are not watching films. Kartikeya 2, Doctor Strange, Thor, such films were liked by Hindi audience despite an average content”, shared Girish Johar.

He further said, “We need to understand that we can’t offer sub-level product to Hindi audience specifically. We need to cater them with a good storyline.”

Looking at the collection and negative response around the film since its release, Film trade analyst Komal Nahta shared on a leading website that, “The dull collections on Thursday (Rs. 1.25 crore) and again on Friday (Rs. 4.25 crore) matched the poor public reports. Yet another flop!”

Calling it to be a good start for Ananya Panday as compared to her prior performances like Pati Patni Aur Woh and SOTY2, trade expert and film critic, Joginder Tuteja tweeted, “Liger / (Hindi) opens well on Friday and on expected lines, brings in 4.50 cr Thursday night paid previews further bright 1.25 cr Total so far: 5.75 cr A good start for a newcomer’s film Vijay Deverakonda, Ananya Panday scores a good start too after Pati Patni Aur Woh and SOTY2. The manner in which DharmaMovies went all out to have a yearlong marketing & promotional campaign with a wide release is a major reason why Liger / managed to take a good start in the Hindi belt! They did their job; now word of mouth to do the trick!”
