IFFI 2022 Jury head Nadav Lapid calls Vivek Agnihotris The Kashmir Filesvulgar, propaganda`

The 53rd edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) was held in Goa from November 20 to November 28, 2022. Among the 25 feature films that were showcased at the coveted event, Vivek Agnihotri’s Kashmir files was one of the qualified films.

At the closing ceremony of the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Monday, the festival’s jury head Nadav Lapid expressed dismay over allowing The Kashmir Files into the competition section. He called the film ‘vulgar’ and ‘propaganda’ on stage.

In his address to the audience, Nadav said, “We were, all of us, disturbed and shocked by the 15th film: The Kashmir Files. That felt to us like propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival. I feel totally comfortable to share openly these feelings here with you on stage. Since the spirit of having a festival is to accept also a critical discussion which is essential for art and for life.”

Lapid’s comments did not go down well with Indian filmmaker Ashoke Pandit and he has demanded action against him. In a tweet tagging Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur, Pandit said that the Jury head ‘added salt to wound’ by calling The Kashmir Files ‘vulgar’ and has demanded an apology for the same.

For those unaware, The Kashmir Files, which was released in theatres on March 11, revolves around the killings and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990 from the valley.
